PRESIDENT SPEECH MARKING 54th ANNIVERSARY AT NATIONAL ECUMENICAL CHURCH CENTRE
Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said that terrorism and kidnapping were still major national challenges because Nigerians had not united against them as they did against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Jonathan made the statement at an inter-denominational church service at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to mark the country’s 54th Independence Anniversary coming up on Wednesday.
He said the country was able to fight and defeat the deadly Ebola disease because Nigerians united against the virus irrespective of political persuasion, religion or ethnic origin.
The president appealed for unity among Nigerians, noting that there was no problem or challenge that could withstand the force of a united Nigeria.
“Take the case of Ebola for example; this is a good example all Nigerians must learn from.
“When Patrick Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria, it was in Lagos that this incidence happened and in terms of politics, Lagos is an opposition party state but the central government is the ruling party.
“From Lagos Ebola moved to Rivers State, also opposition party state.
“But because all Nigerians fought Ebola irrespective of political persuasion, irrespective of religion, irrespective of ethnicity, as individuals we defeated the disease,’’ he said.
Jonathan commended the military and other security services for the successes they had recorded in the counter-insurgency operations despite internal sabotage.
He noted that what the security agencies needed was the support and encouragement of all Nigerians to rid the country of terrorists and other enemies of the Nigerian state.
The president frowned at inflammatory statements and utterances of some politicians and called for restraint in the interest the country.
“We will not require people to come from heaven or other countries to solve our problems. What we require from our brothers and sisters is to encourage our military because it is not easy.
“When people are sleeping in their houses at night, they are busy fighting. Bullets are not badminton rackets or something.
“When I listen to some statements made by some people who call themselves leaders, I feel sad for the country.
“We must believe that we do not have any other country outside of Nigeria,’’ he said.
In his sermon, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oristejafor, said that most of the challenges confronting the country were self-inflicted.
He noted that corruption and terrorism, which he described as `the greatest’ problems facing the country were created by greedy politicians and extreme religious ideologists.
According to him, corruption is fed by greed, which in turn is rooted in poverty mentality.
He defined poverty mentality as the thinking that what one had was not enough.
Oristejafor differed with the school of thought that terrorism was caused by poverty.
According to him, terrorism is caused by extreme religious ideology.
The CAN president, who based his message on Mark 4:35 to 41, said that Nigeria was a boat built by God that could never sink.
He said that as Jesus calmed the storm that threatened the boat conveying Him and His disciples across Lake Galilee, God would take the country through its current challenges and restore peace to the land.
Oristejafor warned trouble-makers to either repent and retrace their steps or be ready to face God’s judgment.
Hon. Justice Walter Onoghen, took the First Reading drawn from 1 Samuel 30:1-19.
The Second Reading, taken from Mark 4:34-41, was taken by the President of the Senate, David Mark.
Other dignitaries who attended the service included the First Lady Patience Jonathan; the president’s mother, Mrs Eunice Jonathan and former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd).
Chief Ernest Shonekan, Head of the Interim National Government; top federal government functionaries, Service Chiefs, state governors, members of the clergy, among others, also attended the service. (NAN)

STILL A VIRGIN
A while ago, Imo State-born singer, Adokiye Kyrian, created a media storm when she disclosed to Potpourri that she was a virgin. Adokiye, who called herself ‘pretty virgin’ during the disclosure said only the man who could buy her mum the private jet she promised her would get to unlock the secrets of her womanhood.AdokiyeJust some days ago, she told Potpourri she now has a boyfriend. But whether the boyfriend has consented to buying her mother the jet she promised her is something she didn’t say. But then, she doesn’t have to, because, according to her, the guy hasn’t gone beyond ground floor of exploring her womanhood.“I have a boyfriend now, But what we share is AGAPE love; no sex kind of love. But I know I want to settle down and have kids. I heard, these days, things have changed; Menopause comes fast now! Young girls aren’t young again after all, ” she began. When Potpourri reminded her it would be like making the poor fellow go through hell, having a relationship without sex, she simply replied: “I don’t think so. Do you know sex hinders blessings? Do you know sex takes your hand very far from the reach of your blessings? I know you are married and have every right to sex but try this sometimes. It always works like magic. It’s faster than 100 million Babalawo’s power. Anyway, maybe it is okay for those who have license to have it but for me, I won’t have it until after marriage”. -

Nigerian Government Today
Nigeria has been in the spotlight every now and then recently, either going through serious scrutiny from foreign media houses or under severe attack by dissatisfied citizens.
Never has Nigeria found herself in such a precarious position since the 1967-1970 civil war. Today, Nigerians live in fear as a result of the growing security challenges. As much as many of us will try to keep hopes alive, we sometimes wonder if the Nigerian ship is sailing towards a Bermuda Triangle.
The average Nigerian knows that the fear of the 2015 general elections is not just the beginning of wisdom but the whole of wisdom in itself. No thanks to the consistent vituperations of the political powers in this country threatening fire and brimstone.
Many consider the President Jonathan's administration as one of the worse in recent democratic dispensations. Some wouldn't even spare it a bit of puffery. In their judgement, to score him is to rate him a total failure. Although, not knowing if they would have fared better in his stead, I still will not blame them. After all, this administration has done nothing other than lie needlessly again and again to the people.
Knowing that a Nigerian politician cannot be totally trusted, this administration has gone a bit further by saying one thing today and coming out to deny that same statement the very next day. In fact, a new record was broken recently on the #chibok girls issues.
One would think that for a job at that high pedestal, only the best of hands will ever make a date(interview) to be recruited but alas, the opposite is the case. The likes of Doyin Okupe, Reno Omokri and Reuben Abati in charge show that we have school boys running the PR of this nation.
No administration has been this unsure of its actions like what we have witnessed in recent times. The spokesperson of the Nigerian military Major General Chris Olukolade has joined the vanguard of giving Nigerians wrong information like in the case of the story of the released #Chibok girls which was later denied. This administration has been about image laundring and those in charge even after paying so much to a foreign company, have failed to deliver giving the likes of Asari Dokubo and Femi Fani Kayode part-time PR jobs for Aso Rock.
As GEJ focuses on his campaign for re-election though he is yet to publicly make an open declaration, he should realize that what the average Nigerian wants is jobs, security, constant power supply and basic infrastructures; not some phoney statistics of how millions of Nigerians were employed without proof, light improved and our economy the strongest in Africa. These statistics could only fool those who decide to live in the dark and not the Nigerians who face the everyday harsh reality of being Nigerians.
He should tell his social media vampires to confirm every bit of information before running to twitter and Facebook. For even if they delete their earlier posts, the people will still refresh it in their minds.
A government that says one thing today and turns around to deny it the very next cannot be trusted. Nigerians need a credible, visionary, bold and pragmatic leader, NOT a government that talks too much for nothing.

Two South Africans, who lost relatives when a guest house at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos collapsed, have told the BBC they intend to sue Nigerian evangelist TB Joshua.
The two men, who both lost sisters in the collapse, are appealing for more families to come together in bringing a case against the preacher.
At least 115 people, including 84 South Africans, died when the multi-storey building fell down earlier this month.
The authorities said it had more floors than its foundation could hold.
On Sunday, Joshua, who is one of Nigeria's best-known evangelists and is popular across Africa, announced plans to travel to South Africa to visit the families of the deceased.
On Sunday, Joshua, who is one of Nigeria's best-known evangelists and is popular across Africa, announced plans to travel to South Africa to visit the families of the deceased.
Emergency workers allege they were prevented from participating in the rescue, only gaining full access to the site on Sunday afternoon - accusations denied by Joshua's church.
Thanduxolo Doro and Mpho Molebatsi waited at Johannesburg's OR Tambo airport for days after the collapse for news of their sisters, who had been visiting SCOAN.
Both families had last heard from their relatives hours before the collapse, which happened at about 13.50 pm on Friday 12 September.
“It is not that the building collapsed, rather what was done after the collapse - we didn’t get any news from the church,” Doro, whose sister Vathiswa Madikiza died, told the BBC.
“When I contacted them, they wouldn’t tell me anything. We saw reports that emergency workers were denied access initially, access that could have saved lives. The actions of the church after the incident are very telling,” he said.
In an open letter published in South Africa's Star newspaper, Doro called on more families to sue Joshua.

“I need to do this for her. Even if I stand alone, I am determined to see that something is done,” he told the BBC.
“I understand that some families are afraid to take on someone who purports to be God’s messenger and I don’t blame them but I will do this.”
Doro said he was informed by South African officials about his sister’s death this week, but has to wait for the results of DNA tests before her body can be repatriated for burial.
He said he had spoken to two families who were eager to join him in suing Joshua, but no concrete plans had been made.
He has not been in contact with Molebatsi, whose sister Hlubi Molebatsi was also killed.

Molebatsi said he had contacted his lawyers. “I have spoken to other families but it has been difficult because this is a time of mourning. I would like to see families get something from the church as some of the people who died were breadwinners,” he told the BBC.
Some 25 survivors of the collapse are continuing to receive medical care following their return to South Africa.
Officials said 16 of the wounded are in critical condition, with some having had limbs amputated and other complications.

Ebola: Rename IDH after Adadevoh, Lagos Assembly asks Fashola
The Lagos State House of Assembly, on Wednesday passed a motion asking the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, to immortalise the late Medical Consultant of the First Consultant Hospital, Stella Adadevoh, by renaming the Infectious Diseases Hospital, IDH, in her honour.
If the governor implements this motion, the hospital would be named Dr. Stella Adadevoh Infectious Diseases Centre.
However, the sitting that was supposed to begin by 10am did not start until about 3:00 p.m.
The motion for the late Adadevoh was moved by the member representing Mushin Constituency 1 at the House, Adefunmilayo Tejuoso and seconded by Muyiwa Jimoh.
Adadevoh died after contracting the Ebola Virus Disease from the late Liberian-American importer of the disease, Patrick Sawyer.
The House reckoned that the late medical doctor took the risk to prevent the spread of the disease by preventing Sawyer from leaving the hospital.
The lawmakers had on Monday called on both Lagos State and the Federal Government to honour the late Dr. Adadevoh.
At that sitting, the lawmakers suggested that it would not be out of place to name the IDH after her.
At the Wednesday sitting, Speaker Ikuforiji directed the Clerk of the House, Segun Abiru, to communicate the decision of the House to Governor Fashola

Psquare visas not grantted due to Ebola fear
Music artiste Peter Okoye of PSquare has shut down reports that they were refused entry visas to Namibia due to Ebola scourge in West Africa. He had confirmed their trip to Namibia in three days time ahead of their planned concert which kicks off their ‘Double Trouble’ tour.
Yesterday there were rumours stating that the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration denied the music group visas due to the Ebola scare. Earlier today, Peter said;
“Hello world we’re bringing Double Trouble to you! Kicking off in Namibia 3days from now, Congo got next (oct 4th), then we’re off to dubai (October 9th)…. Double trouble, world tour live concert"
He made this confirmation after starafrica.com released a report yesterday Sept. 24 stating that the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration denied the music group visas due to the Ebola scare.

Maheeda warns Rihanna
Nigerian Goddess of X, Maheeda has thrown a stern warning the way of American pop star, Rihanna, to stay away from making nude photos as that is her (Maheeda's) unique selling point.
Nigeria's Queen of Nudity, Caroline Sam,or better known as Maheeda, has called out to pop super star, Rihanna, to stay away from copying her nude style which the Naija Bad Girl sees as her unique selling point. The Goddess of X was reacting to the Rihanna's nude photos that has been trending on the social media for a few days now and to state her disapproval, Maheeda took a poke at one of the photos of Riri and promptly went to her twitter handle to call out to the singer to stay away from stealing her style.
She begged the Barbados singer to leave the nude photo stuff for her as she has made that her trademark and would not love to share the limelight with another person.
This is not the first time Maheeda has accused another star of copying her style as she had once said that American rapper, Nicki Minaj had stolen her Anaconda style.
